“I am from another era and another mentality, the word cancer scares me. This happens, above all, to people of my generation. I am going to overcome it. You have to admit it, overcome it and fight it.” With this testimony, published six months ago in the magazine Diez Minutos, Jesus Marinas announced that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. However, despite his desire to recover and continue living, at the end of March he was admitted to the Ramón y Cajal hospital in Madrid due to complications arising from his illness that caused him to die on May 10.
In this last stage, the scathing journalist, 79 years old, was supported by his closest environment. In addition to friends and colleagues from the union, Mariñas felt -once again- the unconditional support of Elio Valderrama, his partner for more than three decades and whom he married six years ago. The Venezuelan, who was accompanying him and did not let go of his hand in his rawest moments, has remained silent until two days after the terrible loss of him, who has reappeared to express the love he still professes for him.
“Good trip, my dear Jesus. You know that I love you a lot. I imagine you will be in Goa with Saint Francis Xavier. By the way, my goodness, what a surprise last night. Super nice. A big hug and may God protect you, ”he addressed the television collaborator directly on his Instagram profile. Mariñas’ environment, aware that she adored the television collaborator, is focused on Elio, who has not yet assimilated that she will not see her husband again in her lifetime. “She will always be in our hearts,” wrote Joaquin Prat, who joined this wave of affection.
A photographer by profession, Elio met Jesús because they both frequented the same work environments. Both one and the other were dedicated to the chronicle of the heart: the talk show host in words and his partner in image, but the latter always with a low profile, more busy being behind the cameras than in front of them. In addition to this, both had a group of friends in common made up of various celebrities. However, when they wanted to formalize their courtship after more than two decades together, the lovers they preferred to say ‘yes, I do’ in secret in front of only two witnesses.
Beyond the content that they published together on social networks, Jesús and Elio discovered little else about their life together, except that they considered themselves an “open couple” who loved each other “on a slow fire”. Despite their age difference, since the cameraman was twenty years younger than the journalist, the couple understood each other perfectly. In an extensive report for the magazine Lecturas they defined themselves as “a happy marriage that lives devoted to a solid love story that has lasted for more than a quarter of a century”.
