The minors hope that the fighting will soon end and the city can be rebuilt.

Ukrainian troops continue to shell several towns in the Donetsk People’s Republic, including its capital, Donetsk. Meanwhile, the southern city of Mariupol recovers after fierce fighting. An RT team spoke with several families, who recounted how they managed to survive in the midst of fire from the Ukrainian forces and do not lose hope for a better future for the city.

The residential areas that are located in the vicinity of the Azovstal steel plant are clear evidence that armed conflicts cut short many destinies. In the region, the name Azov is associated with danger, destroyed houses, broken lives, and those who survived, already consider themselves lucky to be alive.

This is the case of Aliona, whose two children decided to go down to the basement of her house seconds before the impact of a projectile. The house was reduced to rubble and a fire broke out just above the basement. Shortly after, one of the neighbors came to the scene to help the children.

“Aliona started screaming: ‘My children are burning alive!’ I think any man would have done the same as me. I went there and saved them,” says the neighbor. The mother of the minors says that that day she herself was a few centimeters from death, since a bullet hit her very close to her body.

However, not all members of Aliona’s family suffered the same fate. As a result of the projectile explosion, her father suffered a serious chest injury and died minutes later.

The woman and her children now live in a neighbor’s house, but they are optimistic. “I think everything will be normal when Azovstal finally surrenders, then I think they will rebuild the city and it will be even better,” says Aliona’s daughter. “I hope that everything will be rebuilt and that we will live here again, because I don’t want to go to any other city, I want to stay here,” says another girl.
