The Unitary Central of Workers (CUT) valued the approval by a large majority of the Right to Decent Work in the plenary of the Constitutional Convention, which represents a historic step for the trade union movement, since it will be enshrined in the Fundamental Charter.
On Wednesday, the plenary session of the constitutional body approved by 122 votes in favor, 14 against and 9 abstentions, the Right to Decent Work as a fundamental right, enshrining it in the draft of the new Political Constitution.
The president of the CUT, David Acuna, affirmed that this “will allow Chile to be the only country in the world where decent work would be enshrined as a constitutional norm. This has been a job and a deployment in the Convention for quite some time, where we entered a norm with more than 17 thousand 500 signatures of support to be able to reach this historic process”.
Eric Fields, general secretary of the CUT, stated that with this rule, Chile catches up on labor rights, which includes the collective right to strike, recovering union ownership, where the preferential right of the union to negotiate is established, and freedom of association, among others.
The leader indicated that this opens a new cycle in labor relations, because it is not just a catalog of rights, but it has to do with the foundations on which a democratic society is built.
In addition, he specified that although this is an important advance, it is “a still partial triumph because it is necessary to go and convince a people distrustful of politicsthat this Constitution not only overcomes the neoliberal logic of Pinochet, but also affects him in his day-to-day life, because it is going to grant him greater rights, security and return popular sovereignty to the people”. For this reason, he called on all union leaders to take to the streets and work for the victory of the Approval on September 4.
Meanwhile, the national leader of the multiunion, Sylvia Silva, affirmed that this is a historic moment: “We have been able to consolidate and materialize this important stage of work and longing, of hope, and of maintaining firm conviction, which we will see enshrined in the new Constitution, that the whole world is watching with expectant eyes , because we will have the first Constitution in the world that enshrines decent work”.
