The debate on Single Ballot projects began and on Tuesday, discussion by the Judiciary

The Chamber of Deputies began this Wednesday the debate in committee on the projects to establish the single paper ballot, after the summons made last week by the plenary session of the body, at the request of the opposition arch, and agreed to carry out as of Tuesday next to least two informative meetings in person, before advancing with the opinion.

After that debate, which began with a discussion on the methodology that these meetings will have, a plenary session of Constitutional Affairs and Justice commissions defined the schedule for the debate of the reform projects for the Council of the Magistracy, which will also begin on Tuesday next, with the presence of specialists to give that discussion.

In the first place, the single ballot debate -which does not have the endorsement of the ruling party- was marked by the discussion around the modality of the informative meetings, since while the Front of All promoted the need for face-to-face attendance before an issue of such relevance, the opposition proposed that these meetings be held virtually to allow the largest number of exhibitors.

It is that, due to the proximity of the holidays of May 18, in which the national census will be carried out, and May 25, for the anniversary of the May Revolution, the opposition deputies warned that the flights were not guaranteed. that would allow them to function in person.

In any case, it was not ruled out that the guests could participate virtually, as in the discussion of the reform of the rental law.

To make it possible to call this plenary session, the integrations of the Constitutional Affairs and Justice commissions were formalized yesterday, where the official Hernán Pérez Araujo (FdT-La Pampa) and Rodolfo Tailhade (FdT-Buenos Aires) were re-elected as presidents, respectively. while the Budget, in charge of Carlos Heller (FdT-CABA), was already constituted.

At the beginning of the debate, Pérez Araujo specified that on this issue “the search for consensus and dialogue must prevail. We are going to listen to all voices and for that we have a fixed schedule that we will try to respect”, although he considered that the date set by the location could be “a corset”, stating that “if necessary it could be made more flexible”.

After that debate, which lasted more than an hour, Silvia Lospennato (PRO-Buenos Aires) highlighted the difficulties of the current electoral system and said that “the important thing is that we have taken this step,” although she warned: “I It worries that this will not die again in the Senate, where we already had a half-sanction, but it was shelved”.

Lospennato was the one who motorized, along with other opposition groups, the location to deal with the single ballot project.

In the scheme proposed by Together for Change, meetings are planned -in principle- on Tuesday, May 17 and 24, prior to the holidays of Wednesday 18 and 25, to finally seek an opinion on Wednesday, May 31, as a step prior to the aspiration to take the issue to the venue in the first half of June, although that scheme could have some modification.

After that debate, the deputies focused on a plenary session on Constitutional and Justice Affairs, to set a schedule for the debate on the reform projects for the Council of the Magistracy, including the half sanction of the Senate -approved on April 7- .

“The idea is to set a work schedule and have the opportunity to listen to experts on the matter,” reported the FdT national deputy for La Pampa, pointing out: “Don’t worry, we’re going to deal with both issues.”

“We are predisposed for that we have to come, we will not stop listening to anyone,” Pérez Araujo emphasized.

Within the framework of the debate, the national deputy Graciela Camaño (Federal Interbloc-Buenos Aires), a member of the Council of the Judiciary, said that the reform of the body “is one of the most important laws that we are going to vote on this year”, pointing out that this modification is “absolutely necessary”.

“I am aware that I am the one in the middle,” observed Camaño, stating that he would define his vote “according to my best knowledge and belief.”

As the intention of the FdT is to debate both issues on Tuesdays, the day on which the single ballot projects will also be discussed in advance, the deputy Juan Manuel López (Civic Coalition-Buenos Aires) asked that “the single ballot treatment not be limited, which don’t give it a deadline.”

In this way, on Tuesday the debate for the reform of the Council of the Judiciary will also start, in whose discussion the ruling party will promote the project approved by the Senate to bring that body from 13 to 17 members, on the verge of expiration of the decision of the Supreme Court.

With no chance of dealing with the initiative in four days, and without the necessary votes, the Chamber of Deputies started dealing with the issue.

The Court, meanwhile, restored the composition of the judicial body in accordance with the 1997 law – since it declared the 2006 reform unconstitutional – and the president of the highest court, Horacio Rosatti, assumed leadership of the body weeks ago.
