A honeymoon in a paradise destination: from the outset nothing announced this outcome. However, it was under these circumstances that Marcelo Pecci, a Paraguayan prosecutor who dedicated his life to fighting crime, was murdered. He died this Tuesday.
Marcelo Pecci was on a private beach on the island of Baru, Colombia, with his wife, journalist Claudia Aguilera, when the murder took place. According to Claudia Aguilera told the newspaper “El Tiempo”, “two men attacked Marcelo, they came in a small boat, or in a jet ski, the truth is that I did not see well”.
A silent murder followed, where only two gunshots were heard – which hit Marcelo Pecci in the face and back. The assassins did not utter a single word.
Claudia Aguilera escaped with her life, along with the couple’s daughter. This is because hours before the tragedy, the journalist had announced on Instagram that she was pregnant. The couple had married on April 30.
Marcelo Pecci, 45, became known for having worked in money laundering and drug trafficking cases. Among his most popular cases are the investigation into the murder of the daughter of a regional governor last year and the case of former player Ronaldinho Gaúcho, arrested in 2020 for trying to enter Paraguay with a false passport.
An ongoing investigation
The reasons and those responsible for this crime are still to be determined, and the Paraguayan embassy in Bogotá states that “the criminal investigation and information authorities are in the area with Mrs. [Claudia Aguilera] and are already taking all appropriate measures and carrying out the investigation”.
Colombia’s national police, Paraguay’s Public Ministry and US authorities are working together to investigate the case, with the director general of Colombia’s national police, Jorge Luis Vargas, traveling to the region where the crime took place.
“We have information that is being investigated urgently and that is confidential to help us identify those responsible for this regrettable incident,” said Jorge Vargas.
Paraguayan prosecutor Augusto Salas told AFP that the murder appeared to be “typical of the mafia, so that’s how I will consider it until proven otherwise.”
Paraguayan President Mario Abdo reacted to the case on Twitter, saying that “the cowardly murder of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci in Colombia saddens the entire Paraguayan nation”, adding that he condemns “this tragic event”. “We will redouble our commitment to the fight against organized crime.”
