You are currently viewing Prince Charles – the symbolic importance of what happened in the British parliament

This Tuesday, the 10th, the opening session of the British Parliament took place at the Palace of Westminster, in London. An event that was marked by the absence of the queen Elizabeth II, who, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace, found it impossible to attend due to mobility difficulties. The 96-year-old monarch then delegated that responsibility to her son and heir: the prince Carlos.

Next to the eldest son, the prince Williamand of the woman, Camilla, Carlos represented the monarch in this session of great importance for the British government. He read the nine-minute speech that had been prepared by his mother and marked, with obvious symbolism, what awaits him for the future.

The fact that Carlos was given this responsibility is seen, by many, as the beginning of the transition to replace his mother as head of state. This was, then, a historic moment and a new step in the future king’s journey. A glimpse into what is expected for the future of the British crown and a way to get the population used to seeing Carlos in a role of power.
