Achtereekte does not have to get used to the yellow-black uniform. She has been skating for Jumbo-Visma since 2017 and was crowned Olympic champion in the 3,000 meters in PyeongChang in 2018. At the World Cup she was good for silver (2020) and bronze (2021).
Her contract with the skating team expired last month, but Achtereekte is not finished with top sport yet. She took the plunge and called Merijn Zeeman, sporting director of the cycling team.
With success, the Dutch can join a training camp with the cycling team of Jumbo-Visma. “Deep in my heart I have always had a passion for cycling,” says Achtereekte.
“I sometimes secretly thought: why don’t I do that? But yes, the skating went well and that was my focus. Now I still have the opportunity to develop into a professional cyclist and I am very grateful for that.”
“It will go through trial and error. As a skater you ride alone in a lane and you are not bothered by anyone. Now I have to learn to deal with the nervousness, the jostling. That will take some getting used to, but I assume that I will learn those skills quickly. I’m going to look at the art of my teammates and hope that I can play a role within the team first in service.”
A program will be drawn up for Achtereekte based on her development in training. She is certainly at the start of the Dutch championship on June 25.
