American video game company Electronic ArtsEA) and the International Football Federation (FIFA) will end the cooperation, which lasted almost 30 years, according to The New York Times.
Due to the inability to renew the contract, the football simulator FIFA 23 will be the last game in the series. The new name of the series will be EA Sports FC.
Negotiations between EA and FIFA continued for several months. In October 2021 New York Times wrotethat the football federation demanded a doubling of deductions for the use of FIFA rights – up to a billion dollars in four years. Under the current contract, the federation receives about $150 million a year.
The partnership agreement between EA and FIFA was supposed to end after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The document has been adjusted so that it is valid until the Women’s World Cup, which will be held in the summer of 2023.
The game itself won’t change much. Most of the world’s top clubs and stars will continue to be playable through separate team and league licensing agreements, although the World Cup itself and other FIFA-controlled events will no longer be included in the game.
The first game in the FIFA series came out in 1993, and since then it has generated more than $20 billion in sales. Electronic Arts estimates that 150 million people play FIFA.
In March 2022, Electronic Arts stopped selling its games in Russia and Belarus until the end of the war in Ukraine.
