Russia was not invited to the donor conference on Syria in Brussels because of the events in Ukraine, confirmed the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell.
“Russia was not invited, since we invite only those partners who are interested in promoting peace,” he said journalists.
According to Borrell, Russia’s operation to protect the Donbas “does not indicate that Russia is interested in maintaining peace,” writes RIA Novosti.
On April 9, Josep Borrell called for a military solution to the Ukrainian crisis. On April 11, he reaffirmed the EU’s desire to resolve the Ukrainian crisis “on the battlefield.”
As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted, Borrell’s words “significantly change the rules of the game.” The minister suggested that Borrell “either had accumulated something personal”, or he made a slip of the tongue, “or blurted out something that no one instructed him to.”
Also in Moscow, Borrell was offered to “come to the battlefield” after his statements.
