The study revealed that almost 19.7 million people “face high levels of acute food insecurity”, representing 47% of the total population of Afghanistan.
The UN published on Monday a report in which he warns of the worrying food insecurity that in some parts of Afghanistan comes to be described as humanitarian “catastrophe”.
The study, conducted primarily by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program, revealed that nearly 19.7 million Afghans “face high levels of acute food insecurity”, which represents 47% of the total population of Afghanistan, concentrated, above all, in the northeast of the country.
According to the Integrated Classification of Food Security Phases, 20,000 Afghans have reached the famine phase, that is, the most dangerous level of the five existing ones. Another 19.62 million people are in the crisis or emergency phase.
In addition to those who experience these three levels of acute food insecurity, another 14.6 million fall into the category of food-stressed.
The analysis also lists the main reasons for the complicated humanitarian situation in the country: economic deterioration, drought, high prices of food and the global impact of the conflict in Ukrainewhich has made food more expensive around the world.
