The Egyptian president, Abdelfatah al Sisi, announced on Wednesday the release of 3,273 inmates on the occasion of Sinai Liberation Day, which is celebrated in Egypt on April 25.

The move follows Tuesday’s announcement by the president to Sisi of reactivate the Presidential Pardon Committee, According to the Egyptian daily Al Ahram.

Under the Egyptian Constitution, the president can pardon prisoners have firm sentences. Thousands of prisoners have been released in recent years thanks to presidential pardons.

The presidential decree coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when Muslim countries usually announce such measures.

Sinai Liberation Day is celebrated on April 25 in Egypt on the occasion of the liberation of the peninsula that was occupied between 1967 and 1982 by Israel.
