Russia is expelling 40 employees of the German embassy, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.
The corresponding note was handed over to the German Ambassador to Russia Geza Andreas von Geyr. The expulsion was a response to similar actions by Berlin.
Germany declared 30 employees of the Russian embassy persona non grata on April 4. Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock said that they “worked daily against the freedom and unity of society.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called it “an evil act of the German political machine.”
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, there have been a total of expelled over 400 Russian diplomats. Moscow usually responds to such expulsions with mirror measures.
