You are currently viewing "On the verge of war": Taiwanese broadcaster apologizes for breaking news of China attack

The Taiwanese TV station CTS reported a Chinese attack on Taiwan this week. Wednesday morning’s news program carried the following headlines: “PLA Rockets Hit New Taipei”, “Taipei Port Explosions, Ships Destroyed” and “On the Brink of War”.

The false war warnings hit a nerve as Taiwanese fear that China may one day attack its smaller neighbor.

In response to viewer panic, management said the headlines were used in a disaster drill taped Tuesday. The overlays appeared on the news due to a technical error. Not only false reports were spread about a Chinese attack, but also about a volcanic eruption and a strong hailstorm. “CTS sincerely apologizes that this grave mistake has caused panic and anger among the public,” it said in a statement.

As it became known on Friday, two of the channel’s top managers resigned. It is a matter of CTS-General Manager Chen Ya-ling and Tchen Yu-chiou, CEO of TBS Group CTS heard.
