Winning the cup is a guarantee for European football. Whoever triumphs will ensure a spot in the last preliminary round of the Europa League. But the outcome of the final also has an impact on other tickets. The two scenarios explained.
With cup win Anderlecht
If Anderlecht win the cup, it can only get even better afterwards. The Purple & White’s participation in the Champions’ play-offs means it can get an even better European ticket via a first or second place.
Then the cup ticket (for the last preliminary round of the Europa League) goes to the number three. The winner of the Europe play-offs will then play European anyway, without a final match against the number four.
With cup win KAA Gent
KAA Gent will have the chance to grab its best possible European ticket on Monday. Suppose the Buffalos succeed in this and they also win the Europe play-offs, the final match with the number four is superfluous – the latter immediately receives the European starting ticket.
Should Ghent win the cup, but not the Europe play-offs, the final match will continue.
But…
The rules of the Pro League on the distribution of European tickets are not completely watertight. In the scenario that Union only finishes fourth in the Champions’ Play-off and the cup winner does not win the Europe Play-off, the European ticket of the number three is in danger.
