The Tres Arroyos Rural Prevention Command found 140 turtles as part of a procedure at a home in that city. Now, due to the fact, actions were initiated for violation of Law 22,421 (on the Conservation of Fauna) against the owner of the property. According to local press reports, the raid was carried out in recent days by order of UFI No. 20 of Bahía Blanca, led by prosecutor Rodolfo De Lucía.
Likewise, the turtles were in the patio of the house and crowded into a shed, in addition to being poorly fed. Meanwhile, the researchers suspect that the objective was to commercialize the animals.
The specimens were put under the orbit of the organization Pacma (Animal Protection Environmental Awareness), where it was planned that – immediately – they be reviewed by a veterinary doctor.
It is worth remembering that tortoises are particularly slow and calm animals, with bulky and rough shells, which can vary greatly in terms of weight, length and coloration. It is usual to find them outdoors where they are exposed to the sun to warm their cold blood, and in general they have a patient temperament. The life expectancy of this animal changes a lot when it comes to the species that live on land. They usually live between 60 and 70 years, although some species last a little longer. This is the case of the box turtle, whose life expectancy is around 100 years.
