Senator Francisco Huenchumilla spoke about the incident suffered by the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, along with her entourage while trying to visit a community in Temucuicui. Near the sector a burst of shots was heard and trees were burned.
The former mayor of the La Araucanía region lamented the situation, but commented that it was possibly due to a lack of preparation on the part of the delegation.
“I regret that this problem has arisen, probably due to the lack of a process of anticipation regarding how complex the Mapuche social structure is. Perhaps something was not properly anticipated. We are with good vibes that the Government is doing well, but maybe we have to fine-tune the processes a little, ”he indicated. “Going to Temucuicui requires a very thorough prior analysis, because we are not talking about just any community,” he added.
Along the same lines, Huenchumilla addressed that “Mapuche society has its own codes, its own culture, its own way of relating. The first thing you have to know is that, to get to a community, you have to talk to the head of the community, to prepare the day, the time, the terms of the visit and the purpose of the visit. That is first”.
“Secondly, we must be clear that there are communities of a different nature and with a different vision of what the Mapuche conflict is. And the community of Temucuicui, emblematic, is in a very strong position to fight against the Chilean state”, he stated.
It is for these reasons that for the senator it was possible to appreciate a low preparation on the part of the delegation headed by the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, added to the fact that Marcelo Catrillanca, who received and held a meeting with the delegation, is not the head of the local community.
“Yes, Marcelo Catrillanca is a very loved person, he is a symbol, because of what happened to his son, but he is probably not the head of the community, nor is he among the heads. That was perhaps what went wrong on this visit,” he said.
Despite the incident, Huenchumilla valued the Government’s decision to be open to dialogue to resolve the conflict in the area. “We have one of the most serious problems in Chile, which is the relationship between the Chilean state and the Mapuche people. That requires a great effort to understand the codes and the way to try to start a dialogue”, he stressed.
In any case, the Senate stressed that dialogue “is a method. It is not a substantive thing”, for which he called on the Government to “show their cards” to solve the problem in the area.
“I think that the important thing is what is behind the dialogue; substantively, what are the government’s cards to resolve the issue of land, violence, victims, intelligence services, the role of the Carabineros”, he commented.
For Huenchumilla, the events that occurred to Minister Siches make clear the seriousness of the conflict, which is why he called for more precision on the use of dialogue.
“It is a powerful signal that we are facing a powerful problem. That is why we have to be more precise, regarding whether this dialogue is going to be done simply as a method, without you showing the cards of what you really want to do. All governments have had a dialogue, what has always been lacking is the underlying problem, what is your proposal for a solution as a Government, ”he concluded.
