Lisbon acknowledges impossibility to ban Abramovich from entry due to Portuguese citizenship

Portugal intends to follow all sanctions against Russian businessman Roman Abramovich adopted at the level of the European Union, but will not be able to ban him from entering the country, Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva admitted, Reuters writes.

The reason, as explained by the representative of Lisbon, is that Abramovich has Portuguese citizenship: the businessman received it as a descendant of Sephardic Jews. In January, the country’s authorities launched an investigation into the issuance of a passport to Abramovich, citing information about possible violations.

In March, the Portuguese police detained the leader of the local Jewish community in the city of Porto, Daniel Litvak: the rabbi is suspected of issuing a document that allowed Abramovich to become a citizen of Portugal. The Jewish community denies any wrongdoing and claims to be the victim of slander.

On March 15, Abramovich came under European Union restrictions under the fourth round of sanctions that followed the start of the operation in Ukraine on February 24. In addition to Abramovich, there are 14 other individuals on the list, including Alexander Shokhin, head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, and Konstantin Ernst, general director of Channel One.
