The Christian Democrat, who started with the ARP, has a long track record. In addition to party chairman, he was a senator and minister. He has also held the gavel of the House of Representatives.

Warm memories

Party leader Wopke Hoekstra saw in Bukman an example. “Looking after your loved ones was of paramount importance to him as a starting point for political action. Piet Bukman showed great commitment to our party and political current affairs right up to the very end. We remember him with great respect.”

Group leader Pieter Heerma also cherishes warm memories. “Piet Bukman understood the art of choosing the right moment for the compromise. As the first CDA chairman, minister and Chamber chairman, he meant a lot to our country.”

A box of fruit was never far away from horticulturist Piet Bukman. Growing up among the fruit trees in South Holland, he was taught the importance of a healthy farming sector.

The Reformed Bukman made a career as a trade unionist at the Christian Agricultural and Horticultural Union. In 1980 he was the very first chairman of the CDA, after the merger of KVP, ARP and CHU.

Bukman was by no means one of the gentle surgeons, stinking wounds. It is not for nothing that he was given the resounding nickname ‘the Lenin of Voorschoten’. His hard hand was not always appreciated. At the same time, CDA members think, looking back, that his inflexibility was extremely effective in the first period after the merger.

Bukman made his appearance in several Lubbers cabinets. In Lubbers-I he was given a light portfolio as Minister for Development Cooperation. In Lubbers III he did not get a heavy post either: secretary of state in charge of trade and export promotion. When fellow party member and agricultural cannon Gerrit Braks stumbled over the fishing affair, he took over the post in 1990.

CDA chairman Hans Huibers says he owes Bukman a lot of thanks. “For all the work he has done for the CDA and for the Netherlands. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. We wish them all the best.”
