Daniil Medvedev will give up number one in the world tennis ranking after the defeat he suffered in the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells at the hands of Frenchman Gael Monfils (28) 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. This result will allow Novak Djokovic to climb back to the top from the next.

The Russian tennis player, 26 years old and winner of 13 ATP-level titles, had climbed to the top on February 28 last, driven by the unusual season of Djokovic, who could not play in the Australian Open because he was not vaccinated against the covid like this American tournament, which asked for the same health requirement to participate.

The elimination of Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Dubai tournament caused the Muscovite to break an 18-year hegemony at the top of world tennis of the famous and always weighted “Big 4” made up of the Swiss Roger Federer, the Spanish Rafael Nadal, the British Andy Murray and the Serbian player himself.

Now the benefit will be for the Serbian, who, as was said, will recover the most privileged place in the professional list from next Monday after the fall of the Russian, even with just three games played this season. Djokovic only played in Dubai, with two wins and one loss, since he was deported from Australia and he is not allowed to enter the United States and other countries.

For Monfils it is his second victory against a player ranked first in the world ranking. The French “Panther” had previously defeated Nadal in the Doha tournament in 2009, in the quarterfinal instance, by a double 6-4. Overall he has two wins and 19 losses.

Djokovic will enjoy from next Monday his 362nd week at the top of the ATP ranking, a record number with which he buried, months ago, the 310 weeks that Federer had at the top.

Also absent from the Miami Masters, the Serbian will not be able to defend his place of privilege on the court, so he could relinquish it two weeks later, already in April, if the results go hand in hand with Medvedev in Florida.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal (4) reached the round of 16 of the Indian Wells M1000 tennis tournament after defeating British Daniel Evans (29) 7-5, 6-3. The Spaniard, who achieved victory 400 in Masters, remains undefeated in the 2022 season with 17 wins. For his part, Diego Schwartzman (14) will seek the passage to the next round today, when he faces the American John Isner (23).
