You are currently viewing Unlocking the iPhone with a mask is already possible: this is iOS 15.4

The new iOS 15.4 is now available for iPhone users, and it brings several important new features, the biggest of which is the ability to unlock the iPhone with a mask.

We could say that this novelty comes a bit late, two years after the WHO declared a global pandemic for the new coronavirus, but it is fair to say that implementing it has not been easy. Unlike most Android mobiles, the only biometric unlocking method for iPhones is Face ID, which analyzes our face; a problem if we have it covered with a mask, as it has had to be in recent months.

Apple has had to develop a method to identify us even with the mask on, based only on the parts that are visible, such as the upper part of the face. With the release of iOS 15.4 this week, we’ll finally be able to use it, albeit with a couple of caveats.

For starters, mask unlock is only available on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and not in previous models. Apple has not explained the reason, although it is possible that it is due to the sensors available in the new mobiles. Even so, the company warns that using unlocking with a mask is more insecure than normal, something logical; so, by default, this function is deactivated and if we want it we have to activate it and accept the risks that it implies that it would be easier for someone to unlock your mobile.

Along with this novelty, iOS 15.4 introduces new emoji, including some striking ones such as pregnant men and a gender-neutral Siri voice, neither male nor female. We have an important addition in the Wallet and Health applications, which can now download and store the Covid-19 vaccination certificates, securely encrypted with the mobile access code and accessible like any other card such as credit cards.

The rest of Apple’s operating systems have also been updated, and macOS 12.3 is the one that brings the most news. Finally, after being announced some time ago, our MacBook will be able to use Universal Control, a functionality that allows connect our iPad to use it as a second screen, except that it’s still using its own operating system. So we can move files from one device to another, using the same keyboard and mouse on both.
