In 2018, Jaime Rodriguez Calderonthen Governor of NL on leave, managed to get the necessary signatures for the independent candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic.
The INE had rejected his candidacy in March of that year after detecting hundreds of thousands of false signatures in its previous support collection systems required of independent candidates. A month later, the candidacy was endorsed by an administrative court arguing procedural defects in the decision of the INE.
On his way to the presidency of Mexico the former governor of Nuevo León, assured that he could fight crime because he has suffered it, since he had suffered two attacks, the kidnapping of his daughter Valentina and the death of his son Jaime Lizenco because of organized crime.
