The 1/16th finals have become the final station for Elise Mertens at Indian Wells. In a grueling three-setter, our compatriot bowed her head to the Australian Daria Saville, better known as Daria Gavrilova.
Daria Saville (WTA-409) is on the Indian Wells table as a qualifying player. Connoisseurs knew that the former Russian was not to be underestimated.
As Daria Gavrilova, she won the US Open for juniors and was once 20th in the WTA rankings. Due to years of injury, 28-year-old Saville fell into the background.
Saville started as a racing car against Mertens. In the 1st set, the Australian, who bears her husband’s name, went through the service of our compatriot no less than 4 times.
In the 2nd set, Mertens fought back into the game. When she was 0-4 in debt in the 3rd company, our compatriot offered some resistance. But that didn’t help any more.
After 2 hours and 55 minutes, the score was 3-6, 6-4 and 3-6.
