You are currently viewing Chanel (Eurovision) talks about the criticism of ‘SloMo’: "They frustrate me, I feel the lyrics are mine"

First applause in the Torrespaña press room for the video clip of Chanel Terrero, representative of Spain in Eurovision 2022. Televisión Española presented this Monday, March 14, the video for ‘SloMo’, the song with which the Catalan singer will try to do that good role that our country needs so much at the song festival.

“I was nervous, I wanted the video clip to be yours”, Terrero confessed in the meeting with the media, including EL CONFI TV, comparing the style of the piece with those of artists such as “Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Thalía or Selena Quintanilla”. Hours and hours of filming to “get the best out of all the participants” that have resulted in a video, with Kyle Hanagami at the helm of the artistic direction, in which backlighting, water and dance predominate, a series of elements that may well give clues as to what the scenography of the proposal will be like next May 14 in Turin.

The artist, aware that this year Spain is standing out in the first Eurovision bets, also has her eye on the rest of the candidates and has gotten wet commenting to the journalists on her favorite topics: “I like Italy, the United Kingdom and I have a thing with Ronela [Albania]because I love his ‘Sekret'”. For her part, Eva Mora, head of the Spanish delegation at Eurovision, has called for caution, although she is positive about possible good results.

“You have to be careful, but ‘SloMo’ is unique. There is a lot of ballad, so it suits us. We already know who our rivals are going to be. Not rivals, but companions. At Melodifestivalen we had possible competitors, like Medina”, Mora pointed out. Finally, last Saturday, Cornelia Jackobs, with her ‘Hold Me Closer’, won the Swedish preselection and will represent the Nordic state in the biggest musical and television show .

about reviews

Since she proclaimed herself the winner of the Benidorm Fest 2022, Chanel’s bet has been questioned and placed at the center of the controversy almost weekly: “It’s not just the criticism that has arisen, that’s already happened, but the Eurovision itself, which is a big festival and one that carries a lot of pressure”. In addition, he has revealed that he is working with a ‘coach’ to manage the enormous impact: “I also have a lot of personal strength that I have accumulated over the years. I am applying everything, although there are obviously down days.”

The controversy over the lyrics of ‘SloMo’, considered by some sectors of the population as a normalization of the “commodification of the female body”, reached the Equality Observatory, although any change in the verses was finally denied. “Everything is new for me, it is the first time that I am in the arena and that everything I do generates an opinion. I start from empathy and I think that everyone has their opinion, but when the barrier of disrespect is crossed is when I most want to raise my voice”highlighted Terrero.

Of course, the 30-year-old already has her mind set on Turin and fully confident in a proposal that has sparked much criticism: “My body naturally understood that I was now in the arena after the Benidorm Fest, but the fact of falling to earth was only a few weeks ago. I tell myself ‘be sure of what you think. Just as others have their opinion of her, so do you. Respect your opinion, respect yourself.

On the other hand, when asked if “she has felt judged” by feminism itself, for showing herself as an empowered woman on stage, Chanel does not have much more to say, apart from the fact that “when she goes on stage, she feels more woman than ever, stronger. With claw, with her feet on the ground, very free”. “I haven’t written the lyrics, but I do interpret them […] The moment I heard the lyrics and it seemed fine to me, I began to feel mine. It frustrates me, it’s something that I, as a performer, enjoyed on stage and will continue to enjoy”wanted to clarify Terrero about the modification of the letter that was proposed.

This will be Chanel’s agenda

All Eurovision flag bearers, from the moment they are chosen to give their country a voice at the festival, they usually comply with an intense agenda of promoting the candidacy in different parts of Europe. With hardly any time to digest the reactions unleashed by the ‘SloMo’ video clip, Chanel will shortly leave for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to perform at the final of the Drag Queen Gala of its traditional carnival, which will be held next Friday, the 18th of March, at 9:15 p.m. island time.

On March 26, Terrero will host the first Barcelona Eurovision Party, where she will share a space with representatives from Romania, the Czech Republic and Albania, among many others. Just a few days later, on April 1, he will present his song at the Primavera Pop concert, before attending two essential European events that return after the pandemic: the ‘Eurovision’ parties in London and Amsterdam, on April 3 and 9 respectively.
