In the long flat run-up to the final climb, a leading group of five broke away. Initially, Joris Nieuwenhuis (Team DSM) was also there, but the Dutchman was caught up again prematurely. For the five others, it was a few miles after the foot of the nearly seven-mile climb. It also went too fast for Filippo Ganna – the number 2 in the general classification – he quickly lost the peloton.
With the favorites, under the seething pace of UAE Emirates, the Pogacar team, it was mainly a waste course for a long time. At just over two miles, Adam Yates opened the debates. Pogacar was the only one to follow the Briton directly and moments later Pelle Bilbao and Joao Almeida joined. With a kilometer to go, Yates broke free again with Pogacar in his wheel. The Slovenian was supreme in the sprint.
Like last year, Pogacar and Yates took first and second in the United Arab Emirates. In 2020 Yates did win the race and in 2019 the overall victory went to Primoz Roglic.
