On the same occasion, Doria admitted to being able to give up the candidacy in favor of the union of the third way and Moro reinforced his position in the polls.
In a conference promoted by BTG Pactual, the president of Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), stated that it will reelection campaign of the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as a matter of ‘party coherence’. “The president of my party [Ciro Nogueira] is the Minister of the Civil House. Today, he is licensed from the party. I am the Speaker of the House. So he has one assignment and I have another. I do not interfere in party decisions and he does not interfere in the decisions of the House presidency. It was like that already in the time of leadership of the party. So, of course, for reasons of coherence, I don’t run away, if I have the president of my party as minister of the Civil House, if my party is from the base of the government, deputy Arthur Lira, in the state [de Alagoas]for consistency, should campaign for President Bolsonaro,” he said.
Without citing specific issues, Lira said he hoped things would fall into place and the government would realign. Arthur Lira also said that the National Congress should not approve the PECs that talk about reducing fuel prices. For the president of the Chamber, the solution is the projects that deal with a single rate for the Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) and the charge for the amount of fuel. At the same event, other national exponents of politics also spoke, such as the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), and the former Minister of Justice, Sergio Moro (We can).
Doria and Moro agreed on the need to strengthen the third way and reaffirmed their partnership. The two criticized Lula (PT) and Bolsonaro. And they classified the current and former president as extremists. Doria also condemned Geraldo Alckmin’s (non-party) alliance with Lula for the 2022 elections: “Inevitably, former governor Geraldo Alckmin joined Marcio França. I am not disrespectful to the governor, he is an honest man, a decent man, but he made a wrong choice and is now giving an encore accepting to be Lula’s deputy. I would never accept being a thief’s deputy.”
On the possibility of not running for president, Doria said that all candidates must continue in the election, but did not rule out a change later on. “But this is the path that can help save Brazil. If, further on, we manage to have, with humility, with dialogue with discernment, that the sum of these parties can strengthen the so-called third way, so that it is the best way, then yes, you will not have the nightmare of arriving on the day October 2 with two sad options, Lula and Bolsonaro,” said Doria.
The pre-candidate for Podemos, Sergio Moro, highlighted that he is in third place in the polls and, therefore, sees no sense in abdicating the electoral race. The former judge said there was still not much time for a meeting and that the third way should already be united. “In my opinion, we should already be united. I think it’s an illusion to think that we have so much time in the world, because the extremes have machines that destroy people”, he opined. Moro defended the reforms and stressed the fight against corruption. He also said that he intends to end the privileged forum, which includes the figure of the President of the Republic.
