Cyclo-cross riders Quinten Hermans, Corné van Kessel, Emiel Verstrynge and Joran Wyseure will not participate in the project of Jan Tormans and Patrick Lefevere. “Hans van Kasteren has torpedoed the project,” says the foreman of Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl.
The Tormans CX team, the team of Quinten Hermans, has had a very fruitful season and wants more.
Jan Tormans, the financier of the project, wants to break free from Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert and approached Patrick Lefevere.
Sponsor Tormans proudly announced last weekend that the project with Lefevere was almost done.
“There will be a Development Team and a women’s team in addition to the WorldTour team and a cross team next to it. And there will be a youth ministry underneath,” explained the cycling patron.
But there is now a big hitch in the cable. The riders who have put Tormans completely on the map – Quinten Hermans, Corné van Kessel, Emiel Verstrynge and Joran Wyseure – are in Hans van Kasteren’s portfolio. The cycling manager has now transferred that foursome to another team.
According to our information, Hermans and co are going to Alpecin-Fenix, the team of the brothers Roodhooft and Mathieu van der Poel.
Lefevere: “Van Kasteren has torpedoed project”
“Mr. Van Kasteren has torpedoed the project,” says Patrick Lefevere. “Without having a UCI license.”
“Until last week, Van Kasteren wanted to sell the 4 Tormans cyclocross riders together. It was that or nothing.”
“I had never spoken to some of those riders and I’m never going to let anyone sign if I haven’t seen them before.”
“This afternoon I was supposed to meet U23 world champion Wyseure for a conversation. But suddenly I hear that he and Verstrynge are turning pros with another team.”
The cyclocross project of Tormans and Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl is now cancelled? “I’m not saying that. But those 4 cyclocross riders will not be involved”, concludes Lefevere.
I never let anyone sign that I haven’t seen. This afternoon I normally had a conversation with Joran Wyseure.
Hans van Kasteren, manager of the 4 Tormans crossers, confirmed to our editors that his riders will not stay with Tormans.
“Quinten Hermans and Corné van Kessel will drive until the end of this year at Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux.”
“Promises Joran Wyseure and Emiel Verstrynge will become professionals on March 1. We will announce their new team at the end of the cyclo-cross season.”
And that team will most likely be Alpecin-Fenix.
