The US State Department urged Russia to take measures to reduce tensions around Ukraine. This was stated at a special briefing by a high-ranking representative of the Foreign Ministry, her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“We call on President (Vladimir) Putin to take steps to de-escalate this crisis so that Russia and the United States can develop a relationship that is not based on hostility or conflict,” the State Department said.
The agency spokeswoman added that Washington continues to strive for peace, but clearly understands that Moscow will face serious consequences if the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate.
The State Department added that the United States transferred another $ 200 million in defense assistance to Kiev and is ready to increase support in the event of an escalation of the conflict.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that on the eve of the Russian-American meeting in Geneva, the State Department published another propaganda bulletin about Russian policy “in the Ukrainian direction.” According to her, the material was formulated “on the basis of individual stories taken out of context.” At the same time, “approaches that have nothing to do with reality” were attributed to Moscow.
