More than 50 turtles found dead in India

More than 50 turtles found dead in a lake near Mumbai, in India, and wildlife experts investigate a possible poisoning deliberately by the residents.

According Suhas Pawar, from the conservation group Wild Animal and Reptile Rescue, are at least 57 tortoises from the especie Trionyx those who appeared lifeless.

Nature protection officers came across such a balance after a local policy maker asked them to investigate the foul smell coming from Gauripada Lake in Kalyan, 50km east of Mumbai.

Based on preliminary investigations, experts believe it was a intentional poisoning by the inhabitants of the area, who would have killed the turtles to avoid eating the farmed fish that they had illegally in the lake.

Trionix tortoises are a species of the Trionychidae family, also known as softshell turtles, which is covered by the Wildlife Protection Act.
