The German handball players, plagued by the Corona chaos, will miss the semi-finals at the European Championship.
A severely decimated DHB selection also loses its third main round game against vice world champion Sweden on Sunday evening with 21:25 (10:12) and thus no longer has a chance of entering the knockout phase. 13 German players have now tested positive for Corona at the tournament in Slovakia and Hungary.
The subsequently nominated Hendrik Wagner is in the squad after two negative PCR tests and a medical check – but has problems, as Germany’s coach Alfred Gislason says. The 24-year-old quickly said, “He can’t breathe anymore,” reports the coach. Before the game Wagner felt fit, after that it was different. “After three or four minutes he noticed the virus,” says Gislason. In the final game against Russia, the Icelander will probably not want to bring any players directly from quarantine into the team.
Sweden gets their third win in the main round and is ahead of Spain in first place for the time being. The Iberians are still in action against Norway in the evening. Poland and Russia separate with a 29:29 (13:12).
