Hans Kluge, regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, stated that “It is plausible that the region is approaching the end of the pandemic” once the wave of infections generated by the Omicron variant of coronavirus passes. The agency announced that more than half of the population of the continent will contract the disease in these weeks.

“As soon as Omicron’s wave subsides, there will be for a few weeks and months a global immunity, either thanks to the vaccine or because people will have been immunized by the infection, and also a drop due to seasonality,” the specialist told the agency AFP.

However, Kluge noted that Europe is not in an “endemic era”. “Endemic” means […] that we can foresee what is going to happen; this virus has surprised more than once. So we have to be careful“, he warned.

At the beginning of January, the WHO, Kluge assured that before March more than half of Europeans will be infected with coronavirus due to the expansion of the Omicron variant.

“Ómicron is highly transmissible. At this rate, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) projects that more than 50 percent of the region’s population will have been infected with the Omicron variant in the next six to eight weeks.” reported the WHO regional director.
