TBILISI, Jan 22 – Sputnik. Georgian President Salome Zurabishviil presented to the Parliament two candidates for the post of CEC chairman in accordance with the legislation of Georgia, the administration of the head of state reports. At the end of December, the President of Georgia announced a new selection for the post of chairman of the Central Election Commission and two of its members. A new competition was needed, as the powers of the current chairman of the CEC and two members of the Central Election Commission expire on February 2. According to the administration, out of the three candidates submitted, Zurabishvili chose the current head of the CEC, Giorgi Kalandarishvili, and the constitutionalist and executive director of the Platform 2020 NGO, Tengiz Tevzadze. Now the candidates will present his vision of work as chairman of the Central Election Commission at a meeting of parliament. The candidate who receives the support of 2/3 of the deputies out of 148 represented in parliament today will become the chairman of the CEC. If none of the candidates receives such support, then a second vote will be held and the head of the CEC of Georgia will be the candidate who receives the majority of the votes of the deputies. To date, no party has 2/3 of the votes to ensure the support of any of the candidates. However, the “Georgian Dream” has enough seats to nominate its candidate for the post of the chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia during the second voting. TBILISI, Jan 22 – Sputnik. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvil has presented two candidates for the post of CEC chairman to the parliament in accordance with Georgian legislation, the administration of the head of state reports.

At the end of December, the President of Georgia announced a new selection for the post of chairman of the Central Election Commission and two of its members. A new competition was needed, since the powers of the current chairman of the CEC and two members of the Central Election Commission expire on February 2.

Zurabishvili chose incumbent CEC head Giorgi Kalandarishvili and constitutionalist and executive director of NGO Platforma 2020 Tengiz Tevzadze out of three nominated candidates, the administration said.

All “for” and “against”: politicians have decided on a favorite for the post of head of the CEC of Georgia

Now the candidates will present their vision of work as chairman of the Central Electoral Commission at a parliamentary meeting.

The CEC chairman will be the candidate who receives the support of 2/3 of the deputies out of 148 currently represented in the parliament.

If none of the candidates receives such support, then a second vote will be held, and the candidate who receives the majority of the votes of the deputies will become the head of the CEC of Georgia.

To date, no party has 2/3 of the vote to secure support for any of the candidates. However, the “Georgian Dream” has enough seats to put its own candidate for the post of chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia in the repeat voting.
