Health exempts schoolchildren under 12 from quarantines even if they have close contact

The Government of Catalonia does not set the maximum time that a child must spend in the so-called «reception classrooms», a kind of ‘apartheid classrooms’ in schools in the region where minors who do not speak Catalan must spend an indeterminate number of hours, skipping ordinary classes, until they master the language.

The Catalan Government does not regulate the number of hours per day or the number of years that these children, both from abroad and from other parts of Spain, must remain discriminated against in these “aulas d’acollida”.

As sources from the Catalan educational environment have explained to OKDIARIO, everything concerning the number of hours and the number of students who must be segregated in these “apartheid classrooms” concerns each educational center. “It is somewhat flexible,” they maintain.

In this way, depending on how long they have been residing in Catalonia and how well they have mastered the language, after undergoing a level test, children can spend anywhere from one hour a week to more than fifteen hours in these special classrooms for non-Catalan speakers. according to what each educational center considers appropriate.

In addition, it is also the educational centers themselves that choose which ordinary classes these segregated students renounce while they take Catalan classes in their “reception classrooms”. In this way, they add, as most of these minors come from other parts of Spain and Latin America and already know Spanish, they are normally taken out of the Spanish language classes. However, the school can choose any other subject for the children to get out of their regular classes.

As these same sources maintain, in the “reception classrooms” they try to supply the knowledge that is no longer being acquired in the ordinary classroom, but in Catalan, with the consequent loss of level because they adapt the contents to the scarce knowledge of the language that these students have.

The Department of Education of the Generalitat defines these “reception classrooms” as places of “adaptation for children from 8 to 16 years old from other countries -although many of them are Spanish- who have just joined the Catalan education system and do not know the Catalan language” and adds that it helps children “to acquire basic knowledge of the Catalan language in order to facilitate the acquisition of content in your class group as soon as possible.”

These students receive a letter when they start their classes in these isolated classrooms welcoming them to Catalonia, a “different country” that has little to do «with the neighbors of the Iberian Peninsula».
