Oberhof – Saturday, January 15, 2022, 5:16 p.m

The Austrian lugers just missed out on the podium at the World Cup in Oberhof on Saturday with two fourth places thanks to doubles Thomas Steu/Lorenz Koller and Nico Gleirscher.

In the penultimate race of the season, Steu/Koller were 37 thousandths of a second behind in third place, Gleirscher around a tenth of a second in a German triple victory.

The German couples Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken and Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt and the South Tyrolean Emanuel Rieder/Simon Kainzwaldner were faster than Steu/Koller in their comeback after their break in Sigulda. In the single-seater, there was no match against the Germans, who were led by the season’s dominator Johannes Ludwig.

“A few little things were missing. At the start, especially in Oberhof, I’m struggling,” said Nico Gleirscher. Behind him, Wolfgang Kindl, Jonas Müller and Olympic champion David Gleirscher finished fifth through seventh.

Ludwig won ahead of Max Langenhan and Felix Loch, with which he also secured the overall World Cup victory for the first time. His first pursuers, Kindl and Loch, will not be able to catch him in the final next week in St. Moritz.

Yannick Müller/Armin Frauscher finished eighth in Oberhof. Juri Gatt/Riccardo Schöpf did not score in either race after falling. The Austrian Olympic squad will be announced after Sunday’s races.

The women’s race with the four-time winner of the season, Madeleine Egle, and the team relay follow on Sunday.
