Salt Lake City – Saturday 01/15/2022 10:05 am
At the age of 14 years and 15 days, football talent Axel Kei became the youngest player ever to have a professional contract in US team sports.
Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake announced on Friday that Kei has signed a two-year contract. Born in the Ivory Coast, the American replaces the former “child prodigy” Freddy Adu, who was also signed in the MLS in 2004 as a 14-year-old at DC United.
Kei, who is already 1.95 meters tall and grew up in Brazil where his father played football professionally, came to the USA at the age of nine. In October, the young forward rose to prominence when he played for farm team Real Monarchs in the second-tier USL Championship aged 13 years and 282 days – also becoming the youngest player in US professional team history.
