The fight for the title of the 2022 National Youth Baseball Championship, dedicated to the memory of baseball player Marlon Mesa, begins today with the expectation of whether the Coclé ninth will be able to repeat as monarch of the national baseball in this category.
The tournament starts today with six matches, with the official opening match being played by Coclé and Panamá Metro at the Remón Cantera in Aguadulce at 7 pm Colón vs. Panamá Oeste will also play at the Horacio Mena at 7:30 pm; Chiriquí vs. Darién in Meteti; and Herrera vs. Chiriquí Occidente in the Glorias Deportivas Baruenses; .
The Coclesanos, current national champions in the youth category, come again with a competitive team that aspires to take the highest honors of the tournament.
“Pitching is one of our weapons, so that things can be given to us in 2022. It is a responsibility that we have with our fans, so we are working in that direction,” said Rodrigo Merón, technical director of Coclé.
Merón added that despite the fact that some professional players did not receive permits, they have good material to fight.
Another team that on paper should be fighting for the first places is Panama Oeste, which has an outstanding group of players who have been working together from the lower categories.
“We have a complete team, a more mature team, with 12 repeat players, much more experience and aware of the level we have to get ahead. There are very good comments from our team, but we have to go out focused on giving everything on the field”, said Ángel Sevillano, technical director of Panamá Oeste.
The competition system of the national youth baseball tournament consists of playing in two groups, in a schedule of two rounds in their group and one round of intergroup. In group A are Panama Metro, Coclé, Colón, West Panama, Chiriquí and Darién, while in group B are Herrera, Los Santos, Veraguas, West Chiriquí, East Panama and Bocas del Toro.
The eight best records (regardless of which group they belong to) will qualify for the Round of 8 teams, in which the teams will face each other in series to the best of five games (1 vs 8; 2 vs 7; 3 vs 6; and 4 vs 5). ).
The semi-finals and Final will be played in series to the best of 7 matches.
