Who is El Marro? The former criminal leader sentenced in Guanajuato and the crimes he committed

Guanajuato, Guanajuato. – this friday was sentenced to 60 years of jail JOsé Antonio Yépez Ortiz, alias “El Marro”. who was the leader of Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel in Guanajuato he was sentenced for the kidnapping crime against a businesswoman from the entity, but… What other crimes are Yépez Ortiz charged with?

José Antonio Yépez gained importance at the beginning of the current federal administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, as he was the main person responsible for fuel theft, also called “huachicol” in Guanajuato.

The name of his cartel, “Santa Rosa de Lima” was taken by the community of the same name that is located in the municipality of Villagrán in the Mexican lowlands, from where he recorded a video that went viral for threatening the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG ) when starting in the huachicol.

The disputes between both criminal organizations increased the rates of violence and homicides in Guanajuato, which have decreased since August 2, 2020 when José Antonio was arrested in the release of the businesswoman victim of kidnapping who today has him sentenced to 60 years in prison. .

It is known that at least once, in 2008, El Marro was arrested for robbery and organized crime, however, some time later he was released after paying bail, since then he grew to become the main thief of fuel and cargo trucks.

Yépez Ortiz began fuel theft with a regional leader named David Rogel Figueroa, “El Güero”, however, in 2014 José Antonio decided to create his own cartel with the support of the brothers Lara Belman: Fabián “La Vieja”, Luis Ángel, “El Tortugo” and Noé, “El Puma”.

Once the Guanajuato cartel was created, they expanded their activities to drug trafficking and cargo theft, although their main criminal activity was always fuel theft, with the support of relatives of El Marro with whom they managed to grow their organization.

In recent years, and especially in the last months prior to his capture, José Antonio Yépez’s strength gradually diminished with the captures by the federal government of his relatives and with attacks by opposing groups until in August of 2020 was arrested.

Now El Marro will face justice for the crime of aggravated kidnapping, however, he is yet to be prosecuted for robbery of the nation for his activity as a huachicolero, drug trafficking and the murders to which his organization was credited in Guanajuato.
