Novak Djokovic will be deported from Australia. This has been decided by the Minister of Immigration Alex Hawke. A decision that carries with it your deportation and removal from Open de Australia 2022. The draw was held last Thursday and in it, the Serbian appeared as the first seed. The tennis player must declare this Saturday, pending the final decision on his deportation. This would affect the Australian Open in a different way depending on when it occurs. We analyze all the possibilities before an eventual expulsion of Djokovic.
This Friday, January 14, one day after the draw for the final draw of the Australian Open, the Minister of Immigration, Alex Hawke, announced the withdrawal for the second time of Novak Djokovic’s visa. His deportation would prevent him from defending the title in Melbourne and fighting to win the 21st Grand Slam, to be the tennis player with the most top-flight titles in history.
Despite the announcement of the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic’s visa, his name continues to appear among the players participating in the Australian Open. His lawyers will appeal the decision and the Serb will testify this Saturday before Border Force officials at 8:00 local time – 10:00 p.m. in Spain -, at which time he could be arrested and brought to court the next day. In the event that the Belgrade tennis player finally left Australian soil, obviously, he would not be able to play the tournament, but the consequences in the tournament draw would be different depending on the moment in which the Serb actually left.
The possible scenarios without Djokovic:
If Novak Djokovic’s expulsion occurs before there is order of play, his place in the final draw would be taken by Andrey Rublev, the fifth seed, who had fallen in the lower part of the draw.
If, on the contrary, the expulsion occurs once there is already an order of play, the Serbian would be replaced by one of the losing tennis players (lucky loser) in the last round of qualifying.
In the event that Novak Djokovic’s deportation occurs with the tournament at stake – it starts on January 17 – Djokovic would be eliminated and his next rival would advance to the next round without the need to play.
