The United States accused Russia on Friday of “actively working” to create a pretext to invade or enter Ukraine. Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, He told a press conference that they have information that Moscow has positioned a group of troops to orchestrate an operation with a view to creating a pretext to enter Ukrainian soil.
Last December, EL ESPAÑOL reported that Russia was preparing for an offensive or a cyberattack on Ukraine as an excuse for the invasion, an argument now used by the United States to accuse the Kremlin of wanting to invade the neighboring nation.
The European Union today offered assistance to Ukraine in the face of the cyberattack it suffered early this Friday and which, according to its high representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, aggravates a very serious crisis.
“These actions are intended to destabilize Ukraine and contribute to the further escalation of an already tense situationBorrell said at the press conference after the meeting that the EU foreign ministers held today in Brest (France).
The head of European diplomacy, however, avoided commenting on who was responsible for the attack due to the lack of “proof”. “I can’t point to anyone, although you can imagine with some probability or margin of error where it might come from,” Borrell said.
Brussels has made its rapid response cyber unit available to Kiev, which allows it to “react quickly” to this type of aggression, and Borrell also asked the Member States to allocate the resources provided for in Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) to help Ukraine, although it is not part of the program.
The tension that Ukraine is currently experiencing due to theaccumulation of Russian troops on the border between the two countries focused the discussion that the ministers have held since Wednesday in Brest, in a meeting in which the EU Defense officials were also present.
Faced with this situation, the EU today agreed on a decalogue with the claims against Moscow, among which the rejection “of the Russian attempt to create spheres of influence in Europe” such as those that existed before the fall of the USSR, the warning of sanctions if it attacks Ukraine, and, at the same time, the will to continue negotiating with Russia.
Borrell highlighted the “unity” that has existed between European countries in defense of these principles, in a geopolitical scenario “that has been an opportunity for the EU to exist politically.”
In this sense, he thanked the coordination that the United States and NATO have maintained with the EU before and after their meetings with Russia this week.
