A French court has overturned the mask requirement outdoors in the Paris region. The judges described the order as a significant encroachment on the civil liberties of citizens. Meanwhile, there is a tightening of the corona rules in the country, which primarily affects the unvaccinated.

The rule represents an “exaggerated, disproportionate and unreasonable interference with personal freedom,” the judges said. A French administrative court has now suspended an order to wear a mask on the streets of Paris on Thursday. According to a news agency report AFP the verdict applies not only to the city of Paris with its 2.1 million inhabitants, but also to seven other departments in the greater Paris area with a total of around twelve million people.

According to AFP The Paris administrative court’s ruling came just a day after another court in Versailles, near the capital, overturned a similar order to wear masks outdoors in the Yvelines region.

The regulation that mouth and nose protection should also be worn outdoors has been in effect in Paris since December 31. The rule was imposed by the Paris prefecture to curb the rapid spread of the omicron variant of the corona virus. In the past few weeks there has been a sharp increase in positive corona cases in the French capital.

The number of new corona infections in Paris was a report by the news agency Reuters has risen to 3,899 per 100,000 people in the last seven days, compared to 3,002 per 100,000 nationwide.

Tightening of the corona rules for the unvaccinated

Shortly before New Year’s Eve, Prime Minister Jean Castex also announced that from January 15, a negative test for the nationwide Corona passport would no longer be recognized. Recovery or full vaccination against the coronavirus is now becoming a prerequisite for attending events, restaurants or long-distance travel.

The French Senate approved the tightening of the corona rules on Thursday night. The measure will come into effect when there are more than 10,000 COVID-19 patients in the hospitals. Since this is already the case – 24,000 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated – the measure takes effect immediately. The obligation to provide proof of vaccination as a prerequisite for admission should only apply from the age of 18.
