Hong Kong airport announced this Friday the ban on the transit of passengers from more than 150 countries from Sunday, including Portugal, in order to prevent the spread of covid-19.

The suspension, which affects all countries classified as “high risk” by Hong Kong authorities, will take effect on Sunday for a month.

The measure reinforces a list of countries that were already the target of the suspension, which now includes passengers from Portugal, but also from Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Angola, Mozambique, Angola and Cape Verde.

The decision aims to “control the spread of the highly contagious variant of Ómicron”, justified the airport on the website.

Hong Kong has already banned access to its territory since January 8 to any passenger who has stayed more than two hours in the last 21 days in eight countries (Australia, Canada, United States, France, India, Pakistan, Philippines and United Kingdom).

Transit through Hong Kong airport will now be impossible for people from all other countries considered “high risk”. But they will still be able to enter the city as long as they are vaccinated and subject to a 21-day quarantine.

Along with mainland China and Macau, Hong Kong is one of the last places in the world to cling to the “covid zero” strategy, which consists of preventing the spread of the coronavirus in its territory at all costs and a policy of isolating patients. and your contacts.

This strategy has allowed the city of 7.5 million to register just over 12,000 cases and just 213 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, but at the cost of costly international isolation for the important global financial center.

Authorities have been on alert since a small local outbreak of Ómicron in a restaurant, which triggered massive testing campaigns, frantic tracking of contact cases, closure of bars, sports facilities, schools, cinemas and museums, as well as a curfew for restaurants from 18:00.
