Dortmund – Friday, January 14, 2022, 11:34 p.m
Does he stay or does he go?
All Dortmund supporters are probably asking themselves this question in the Erling Haaland cause.
BVB’s miracle striker is at the top of almost every wish list of top clubs, in the summer he would be available for “only” 75 million euros thanks to an exit clause.
In Dortmund, however, people are not very enthusiastic about the idea of losing their “life insurance”. At the moment, those responsible for BVB are doing everything they can to keep Haaland at the club at least until summer 2023.
But these efforts may have become too much for the 21-year-old Norwegian. After his club’s 5-1 win over SC Freiburg (match report>>>), in which Haaland himself shone again with a brace, he gives his compatriot Jan Aage Fjörtoft an exclusive interview in Norwegian and laments:
“The club is putting pressure on me to make a decision for next season. But I just want to play football. That means I’ll probably have to make decisions soon.”
Haaland also reveals to the former Rapid striker and now sports journalist Fjörtoft that he has not yet negotiated with other clubs out of respect for BVB.
Watzke reacts: “Must also understand our situation”
Only a short time later, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke spoke to the “Ruhr Nachrichten” about the statements of his star protégé.
The 62-year-old says: “He’s a spontaneous person, a young lad. He’s allowed to do that. There’s no problem at all with Erling.”
But Watzke adds the precarious situation from BVB’s point of view: “But he must also have some understanding for us. We can’t wait until the end of May.”
