Loena Hendrickx has conquered a place in the top of figure skating this season. And she proved that again on the first day of the European Championship. The 22-year-old Belgian was the last to act, but that didn’t seem to give her any nerves.
Hendrickx completed a perfect short freestyle. All her jumps went flawlessly and her presentation was also on point. She received 76.25 points from the jury and she cooed with joy when she saw that figure. It is a personal best for Loena Hendrickx. For this, her highest score was 73.53.
With her score, Hendrickx jumped to place 2. She kept two Russians behind her. Alexandra Troesova (75.13) and Anna Shcherbakova (69.05). The latter, the world champion, fell and that cost her points of course.
The gap between Hendrickx and the number 1 is huge. Kamila Valijeva skated just before Luna and almost set a perfect freestyle. The Russian is only 15, but is outstanding. She received 90.45 points from the jury. madness.
The free freestyle is on the program on Saturday. There are twice as many points to earn. Hendrickx therefore defends her second place in the standings. The Russians normally skate a higher difficulty.
“I could only dream of this”, Loena Hendrickx said after her brilliant performance. “The 3 best Russians are here, so I knew I had to do my best and skate for myself. Suddenly I saw a personal best and a second place on the screen.”
Hendrickx also received a so-called small medal after the short freestyle. “For the first time. That’s indescribable. I just had tears of happiness too. It’s really too crazy for words. I still have to let it sink in.”
Skating last but not least caused some stress. “I was already very nervous this morning. But you have to be able to get rid of that. If you believe in yourself, you’ll be fine.”
“This is a bit of self-confidence that is being added again.”
What can we expect for Saturday? “The game just starts all over again. I’m going to enjoy this first.”
