The Constitution, Legislation and Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved and dispatched to the Chamber the draft constitutional reform presented by Matías Walker (DC) and other parliamentarians, so that the closest voting location to the domicile of the voters, for the exit plebiscite to ratify the text of the new constitution.
“We had approved a law in this regard, but it could not be applied to the exit plebiscite, since the electoral norms in force as of January 1, 2020 were in force,” said the deputy and senator elected by the Coquimbo Region.
Walker stated that “with this project, which will now be approved by the court, the voting location closest to the voters’ domicile will automatically be assigned, so that we can never again see scenes like those that occurred in the second round electoral presidential election, with a collapse of public transport, where people had to walk and face serious difficulties to access their polling places that were very far from their places of residence ”.
Asked about the need for this constitutional reform, the parliamentarian explained that although a law was approved that assigns the polling place closest to the home, it could not be applied to the exit plebiscite for the new Constitution, since when the schedule was approved The standards to be applied by agreement of the technical table were those in force as of January 1, 2020, where this new legislation had not been approved.
“Now we have this express rule and we are going to have the certainty that this exit plebiscite, ratifying the new constitution, which will also be with a mandatory vote, not with a voluntary vote; it will be applied immediately to the polling place closest to the voters’ domicile, ”he explained.
Regarding the procedure in the Constitution Commission, Walker said that it was “a transversal project, received the support in the committee of the president of the Servel Board of Directors who valued this initiative, and we now hope to be able to approve it in the Chamber, to send it to the Senate, so that all Chileans have the certainty that when they go to vote for the text of the new constitution, they will do so at the polling place closest to their homes “.
