No extra corona at Kortrijk: "Can't ask for a postponement for match against Gent"

Earlier this week, no fewer than 19 people turned out to be positive in Kortrijk, it was not clear how many players were involved. No new cases were added during a new test round yesterday, the number 8 from the Jupiler Pro League reported.

“At the moment 12 people are still in isolation,” it continues. “Kortrijk cannot request a postponement based on the change of regulations voted on Monday regarding possible postponement in the event of COVID-19 infections. The club complies with the regulations.”

Due to the rising corona figures, a postponement of the first match day(s) in January was on the table at the Pro League on Monday, but that did not make it.

A club could request a postponement if 7 players from the A-team tested positive who participated at least 30 percent of the playing time, or if 2 goalkeepers from the A-core with the most playing minutes were missing. That is not the case at Kortrijk.

On Saturday, Kortrijk came out with the news of 9 infections among players and staff, after which the practice match with RWDM was cancelled. On Tuesday, 19 infections were already involved, the names were not disclosed for privacy reasons.

With a view to Ghent-Kortrijk tomorrow, there was a test round yesterday. So it was completely negative. The match will then continue.

Coach Karim Belhocine has to make do with what he has. “14 players and 5 members of the staff dropped out. I myself only returned from Wednesday. No one from the staff was left, so we couldn’t even organize training for 2 days.”

“Of course anyone who had corona had to stay at home, so that I have no view on the physical condition of my players.”

Not only are there the corona cases, Selemani and Badamosi are at the Africa Cup and Gueye, Alioui, Osabutey and Ocansey are injured.

“I will also think about the health of my players. Covid will make the selection. I will not be able to see who is available again at professional level until the day itself, after they have been home sick for a week. Maybe I will only get 2 or 3 players on the couch.”

Kortrijk ended the year with 9 out of 9, but saw Kortrijk-Antwerp postponed on December 26, incorrectly according to Kortrijk. Belhocine: “We had no corona cases then and the regulations also did not allow matches to be postponed. Yet Antwerp did not show up, I do not understand that.”
