Calviño warns the parties that voting 'no' to the labor reform is going against the recommendations of Brussels

The Vice President of the Government, Nadia Calvin, today warned the political parties that the labor reform conforms to the recommendations of international organizations and it would be very difficult to understand a vote against in Congress on a text that has been the result of an agreement with the social agents, the result of a negotiation in which it has been revised “down to the last comma.”

In a meeting with journalists after speaking at Spain Investors Day (SID), Calviño did not expressly want to say what Brussels’ opinion is on the labor reform, but he did imply that this labor reform is welcomed by the European Commission that it must give its approval so that Spain can continue to receive European funds.

In addition, he has insisted that it is a good reform for society and workers Spaniards because they face the problems of precariousness and temporality in the labor market. Thus, Calviño trusts that it will be approved in early February by Congress.

“It is a key reform, valuable because it responds to the recommendations of international institutions and also improves the quality of workers, which was a social demand. It is also valuable for public support. I hope the law is supported by Congress in early February“, he promised investors who would listen to his presentation.

The vice president has answered his questions, among which there were some uncomfortable ones, in relation to the macroeconomic forecasts that he presented in this same forum last year and they have not been fulfilled. The vice president promised 7% growth in 2021However, neither the INE data nor the consensus projections of national and international organizations and economists support this picture. Everything indicates that Spain closed 2021 with a growth of less than 5%.

Calviño has explained that it is “extremely difficult” to make projections in this context of a pandemic and has defended the prudence of its economic policy. In addition, it has exposed record employment and collection data – in 2021 tax revenues were 4% higher than before the pandemic – as a sign of the economic recovery.

Finally, he recalled the great opportunity that European funds represent for the Spanish economy. Later, before the questions of the journalists, for the judicialization of the distribution, the vice president has asked the PP to “row in the same direction” from the Government with European funds.
