The authorities of Swiss they thought that the spread of the Omicron variant could make the coronavirus no longer a pandemic and it becomes an endemic disease. For the time being, however, they said they will maintain the precautionary measures.

These statements come two days after the Spanish government revealed that it is working on a plan to assess the evolution of the virus with “different parameters”, as an endemic flu-like disease and thus “stop counting cases” daily.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, explained that the plan is based on the evidence of the low mortality that the coronavirus now has regarding the number of cases that are registered, after two years of pandemic and with the advance of vaccination.

The president added that what contributes to the low fatality is the fact that Ómicron, although it is very contagious, generates milder clinical pictures and it is already dominant in much of the world.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) came out yesterday to the Sánchez crossing, warning that “it is premature” to speak of the end of the pandemic since there is still a high level of uncertainty about the variant.

The UN health agency recalled that the coronavirus surprised “more than once”, so “it is not a good idea” to make forecasts.

The Swiss government, which supports Sánchez’s theory based on the fact that the Ómicron has generated milder symptoms and fewer deaths and hospitalizations, predicted today “the beginning of the end” of the pandemic.

“Maybe we are in eve of a turning point which could be decisive with the transition from a pandemic phase to an endemic phase, thanks to an immunity in the population that reaches now high levels, “declared Health Minister Alain Berset at a press conference.

Taking vaccination and cures into account, the immunity rate for people over 20 years of age exceeds 90 percent in Switzerland, and even reaches 97 percent for people over 80, he explained.
