North Korea has reported a successful test of a hypersonic missile. The projectile is said to have traveled a distance of approximately 1,000 kilometers and hit its target. This was the second rocket launch in North Korea within a week.

The government in Pyongyang has made further progress in developing hypersonic missiles that are potentially capable of nuclear weapons. As the Central Korean News Agency (KCNA) announced on Wednesday that the head of state Kim Jong-un followed the test of a hypersonic missile by the Academy of Defense Science on Tuesday and praised the great success in the development of such weapons. The aim of the start was to check the general technical properties of the weapon under development.

“The superior maneuverability of the hypersonic gliding missile was clearly demonstrated by the last test launch.”

The development of such weapons is one of the “five core tasks” of the five-year plan to develop defense capabilities set in 2021, the statement said.

South Korea and Japan spoke on Tuesday of testing a missile by North Korea. The Ministry of Defense in Seoul said the alleged ballistic missile had reached a height of 60 kilometers and flew over 700 kilometers at a maximum speed of ten Mach. The South Korean military spoke of possible technical improvements compared to the previous missile test last week. For its part, Japan announced that the missile had crashed into the sea outside its exclusive economic zone. There were no reports of possible damage. It was the third time since September and the second time in a week that North Korea claimed to have tested a hypersonic missile.

Hypersonic weapons are particularly difficult to intercept because they can reach more than five times the speed of sound and are maneuverable. So-called hypersonic gliders can be launched from ballistic missiles. UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles, which, depending on their design, can also carry a nuclear warhead.
