Increase in infections continues, number of new corona patients in hospitals fluctuates

In the past seven days, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) was informed that the corona virus has been diagnosed 209,073 times. That equates to an average of 29,868 positive tests per day, the highest level ever. That average is rising for the fifteenth day in a row.

Amsterdam again had the most positive tests. In the capital, the corona virus was diagnosed in 2,521 inhabitants. 1548 confirmed infections have been registered in Rotterdam and 1441 in The Hague. This is followed by Utrecht (901), Eindhoven (541) and Breda (502). Only on Ameland no one tested positive.

The number of reports of deaths continues to fall. In the past day, RIVM was told that eight people had died as a result of their infection. For a Wednesday, that’s the lowest number since October 6. It concerns two people from Rotterdam and also residents of Almere, Wageningen, Lisse, Wijchen, Deurne and Alblasserdam. Just because their deaths have been reported now, doesn’t mean they died in the past day.

In the past seven days, 85 deaths have been recorded, an average of 12 per day. That is the lowest level since October 30.

The number of new admissions of corona patients to the nursing wards has fluctuated in recent days. While 146 new people with Covid-19 were admitted to hospital between Monday and Tuesday, there were 94 in the last 24 hours. The total number of corona patients occupying a hospital bed is also decreasing and increasing, as can be concluded from the most recent figures from the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS).

On Wednesday there were still 1,432 people with Covid-19 in Dutch hospitals. That is 56 less than 24 hours ago. From Monday to Tuesday, the number of corona patients in hospitals also decreased, but the day before there was an increase.

Care employees of the nursing departments are currently treating 1057 corona patients, 45 less than 24 hours ago. That means more people with Covid-19 were allowed to leave a nursing ward than the 94 who were newly admitted. On average, 119 new corona patients per day were admitted to a nursing ward in recent days.

January increase

The more contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus is currently doing the rounds. Last week, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), a record number of 201,536 people were told that they were infected. According to the LCPS, it is not yet clear what effect these high numbers will have in hospitals. The coordination center does say it expects the influx of new corona patients into hospitals to increase in mid-January.

375 seriously ill corona patients are currently being nursed in intensive care units. That is 11 people less than Tuesday. Last 24 hours, 11 new people with Covid-19 were admitted to an IC ward, but because more people died or were allowed to leave the wards, the number of IC beds occupied by corona patients fell.
