Mitten in Rom: Beerdigung mit Hakenkreuz-Fahne

In the north of the Italian capital, a woman was buried in a coffin with a swastika flag on Monday. The police ran the news agency Ansa according to investigations into the case.

According to media reports, the funeral was held by a supporter of the right-wing splinter party Forza Nuova. The 44-year-old died of complications after an operation. Some guests are said to have shown the so-called Roman salute, better known in Germany as the Hitler salute, on the coffin.

The diocese in Rome condemned the incident as “serious, offensive and unacceptable ideological instrumentalization” and distanced itself from the behavior. The parish did not know anything about the plans of the mourners.

The Forza Nuova party is considered a right-wing extremist with neo-fascist tendencies. Party members devastated a headquarters of the Italian trade union federation CGIL in Rome in early October 2021 during protests against the government’s corona measures. As a result, some alleged perpetrators were arrested. The request to ban the party was then tabled in the Italian parliament.
