TBILISI, 12 Jan – Sputnik. The Batumi City Court held a preliminary hearing in the case of the collapse of a residential building in Batumi, which killed nine people, including three minors. All three of the accused – the owner of the apartment and two workers, do not admit their guilt. They are accused of “violation of safety rules during construction work, resulting in the death of people and causing grave consequences.” The judge did not grant the defense’s motion to release the defendants during the trial. All of them will be waiting for the verdict behind bars. If convicted, the detainees face two to five years in prison. Shortly before the hearing, the relatives of the accused workers staged a protest outside the courthouse demanding an objective investigation of the case. They stated that the results of the examination confirm the innocence of their relatives and that responsibility rests entirely with the owner of the apartment. Relatives of the defendants were asked to take into account the fact that two floors had been added to the five-story building earlier, and an elevator had been installed, which, according to them, could provoke a collapse. .The only survivor of the collapse of a house in Batumi was discharged for hospitals >>> Prosecutor Alexander Dzirkvadze insists on the opposite. Consideration of the case on the merits will begin on January 26. As part of the investigation, more than 100 people were interrogated, dozens of examinations were carried out, information was requested from government departments and private organizations. The examination showed that the reason for the collapse of the house was the dismantling of the load-bearing walls on the first floor.

TBILISI, 12 Jan – Sputnik. A preliminary hearing was held in the Batumi City Court in the case of the collapse of a residential building in Batumi, which claimed the lives of nine people, including three minors.

All three defendants – the owner of the apartment and two workers – do not admit their guilt. They are accused of “violation of safety rules during construction work, resulting in the death of people and causing grave consequences.”

“We did not touch the load-bearing walls, I did what I was told,” said one of the workers, Georgy Surmanidze.

The judge did not grant the defense motion to release the defendants during the trial. All of them will be waiting for the verdict behind bars. If convicted, the detainees face two to five years in prison.

Shortly before the start of the hearing, the relatives of the accused workers staged a protest in front of the courthouse demanding an objective investigation of the case. They stated that the results of the examination confirm the innocence of their relatives and that the responsibility lies entirely with the owner of the apartment.

The relatives of the defendants were asked to take into account the fact that two floors were built on the five-story building earlier, and an elevator was installed, which, according to them, could provoke a collapse.

The only survivor of a house collapse in Batumi was discharged from hospitals >>

Prosecutor Alexander Dzirkvadze insists on the opposite.

“The conclusion of the examination directly states that the cause of the collapse was the demolition of the load-bearing structures on the first floor, which was done by the accused and what could not have been done,” Dzirkvadze said.

Consideration of the case on the merits will begin on January 26. As part of the investigation, more than 100 people were interrogated, dozens of examinations were carried out, information was requested from state departments and private organizations.

According to the investigation, on October 4, workers in violation of technical and safety rules, without appropriate engineering knowledge and permission from government agencies, began to demolish the walls. The tragedy took place on 8 October. In the afternoon, when many were at work or at school, an entire staircase of an apartment building collapsed.

The house is located at st. May 26, 13.
